Marjorie Smith Payne, 93, Bidwell, Ohio went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, February 21, 2018 in Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late John Roy and Lola (McDaniel) Smith, born July 30, 1924 in Gallia County, Ohio. She married E. Maurice “Dickie” Payne August 12, 1950 and he preceded her in death November 15, 1982.
Marjorie was a teacher whose career spanned thirty-three years before her retirement from Gallia County Local Schools. During those years, she taught at The Lincoln Colored School, Gallipolis, Ohio; Blackfork Elementary School, Blackfork, Ohio; and Bidwell Porter Elementary, Bidwell, Ohio. She was a member of OEA and Gallia County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member and past Matron of O.E.S. Lucy Ann Chapter #79. She was also an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Bidwell, Ohio, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and in the Willing Workers Club and Women’s Auxiliary and was a member of Providence Regular Missionary Baptist Association, where she served in numerous capacities. Marjorie was always available to lend a hand to anyone in need within the community.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Richard (Robin) Payne, Bidwell, Ohio and grandchildren: Kayla (fiancé Aaron Childs) Payne, Columbus, Ohio and Bryson Payne, Bidwell, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Iris) Payne, Middleport, Ohio; Mike (Patty) Payne, Columbus, Ohio; sister-in-law, Ada Smith, Dayton, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marjorie was preceded in death by brothers and sister, John Robert Smith, Charles Smith and Mary Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Mt. Carmel Church, Bidwell, Ohio with Rev. Dr. Gene Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, Ohio. Friends and family may call at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis Sunday 4:00-8:00 PM.
