Billie "Bill" Leland Petrie, 87, Vinton, Ohio went to be with the Lord Monday, July 29, 2013 while visiting family in Pikeville, Kentucky. He was born October 25, 1925, son of the late Clyde and Nadine Kitts Petrie. He married Jessie Coleman December 29, 1945 in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Bill was a Veteran of WWII, Company "E", 137th Infantry, US Army and served in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes. He received a Silver Star, five Bronze Stars and the WW II Victory Medal for his service. Bill was a member of the Vinton Fellowship Chapel, American Legion Post 161, VFW Post 4464, and DAV Post, Gallipolis, Ohio. A long time farmer, he retired from Southern Ohio Coal Raccoon #3 Mine. He loved camping, bowling and spending time with his family and friends.
Bill is survived by five children: Ronald (Denita) Petrie, Vinton, Ohio; Larry Dean (Florence) Petrie, Vinton, Ohio; Glenna (Danny) Neal, Jackson, Ohio; Billy (Jean) Petrie, Vinton, Ohio; Timothy (Angie) Petrie, Gallipolis, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, twenty nine great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers: Daryl (Irene) Petrie, Jackson, Ohio and Norm (Maryanne) Petrie, Pickerington, Ohio; sisters: Mary George and Karen Petrie, both of Vinton, Ohio. He is also survived by brothers-in-law: Robert Coleman, Hinckley, Ohio; Jack Thacker, Lexington, South Carolina and sisters-in-law: Bessie Baker, Hinckley, Ohio; Tiny Hopkins, Pikeville, Kentucky; Frances (Carl) McDonald, Hinckley, Ohio and Velma Coleman, Bidwell, Ohio.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Jessie Petrie, he was preceded by an infant daughter, Sandra Sue Petrie; brothers, Dave and Frank Petrie and sister, Elsie Oiler.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Vinton Baptist Church, 11818 SR 160, Vinton, Ohio with Pastor Danny Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Vinton Memorial Park. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Vinton American Legion Post 161. Friends may call at the Church Thursday 4:00-8:00 PM. The McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton is honored to serve the Petrie family.
