Claude H. Mays, 94, Wellston (formerly Vinton), passed away in the Jenkins Memorial Health Facility, Wellston, Thursday, April 29, 2004. He was a retired coal miner retiring from the Gene Engle Construction Company in 1970. He was also a World War II Army Veteran and an avid sportsman, hunter and reader. He was born August 9, 1909 in Elliott County, Kentucky, son of the late John L. And Fannie Pennington Mays.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Likins in February 1982. Also preceding him in death were four sons and two daughters, Arthur, Donald, Denver, Douglas, Elizabeth and Patty Mays; two brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters, Joyce (Jack) Whitmore, Phoenix, Arizona and Beulah (Dave) Reed, Wellston; daughter-in-law, Opal Mays, Bidwell; thirteen grandchildren, twenty six great-grandchildren and one sister, Lettie (John) Loveless, Morehead, Kentucky.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, May 2, 2004 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton with the Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will be in the Vinton Memorial Park. The American Flag will be folded and presented by the Vinton American Legion Post 161. Friends may call from 11:00-1:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
