Dorothy E. Sheets, 92, Rio Grande, Ohio died peacefully in her home Friday, October 18, 2013. Dorothy was born September 13, 1921 in Vinton, Ohio, daughter of the late Francis and Elizabeth Cardwell. Dorothy attended one room schools including Gravel Valley and Bunker Hill in Gallia County as well as attending Vinton grade school and high school. After being advanced ahead several grades, Dorothy graduated in early 1938 and was class Salutatorian. She retired from Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio after many joyous years in the Pediatrics Department. She spent her life serving others as a devoted caregiver. She was an accomplished poet who won several awards and published poems. Even at 92, she could do lengthy recitations of poems and classic literature without missing a single word.
She is survived by three daughters: Donna Sheets Winebarger, Boone, North Carolina; Doris (Roy) Wilkins, Rio Grande, Ohio and Patricia (Robert) Confer, Springfield, Ohio; five grandchildren: Steve Runyon, Victor Winebarger II, Michelle Huggins, Doug Wilkins, Jon Wilkins and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, William Cardwell, Anchorage, Alaska and two sisters-in-law, Sally (Darrell) Cardwell, Belleville, Michigan and Rita (Lowell) Cardwell, Vinton, Ohio. In addition, she is survived by extended family: Tom Cook, Rouie Logue, Raymond Cook, Carolyn Owens, Evert Cook and Mary Alice Logue. Dorothy will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett E. Sheets; two brothers, Lowell Cardwell and Darrell Cardwell; two sisters, Juanita Ferguson and Anna M. Cardwell and one grandchild, Tim Wilkins.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 23, 2013 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel, with Rev. Dan Lamphier officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohio Valley Memory Gardens, Gallipolis, Ohio. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Tuesday 4:00-7:00 PM.
