Elmer Elwood George, 86, Obetz, Ohio (formerly of Vinton, Ohio) passed away following a brief illness Friday, August 13, 2021 in Mount Carmel East Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. The son of the late Wellie and Birdie (May) George, he was born in Gallia County December 11, 1934.
A United States Army Veteran, Elmer was a member of Weapons Platoon, Company "A" – 1st Battle Group, 3D Infantry (The Old Guard) beginning his service in Kansas where he was recruited to serve on the Presidential Honor Guard for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an honor he was extremely proud of.
He married Lena E. (Russell) George May 9, 1959 and she preceded him in death April 26, 2018, after 58 years of marriage.
To this union were born three surviving children: Anthony Elwood George and Michael Shane George, both of Obetz, Ohio; daughter, Angela Eloise (Mike) Grant, Amanda, Ohio and grandchildren, Haylee and Christopher Grant. Also surviving is his sister, Bertha Hale, Wilkesville, Ohio and numerous extended family members.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters Nellie Marie Conger and Edith Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 17, 2021 in the Morgan Center Wesleyan Church, Bidwell, Ohio with Pastor Isaac Shupe officiating. Full Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Vinton American Legion Post #161. Burial will follow in Morgan Center Cemetery, Bidwell, Ohio. Friends and family may call at the church Tuesday 11:00 AM to the time of service. Arrangements are under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel.
