George Newton Lemley

George Newton Lemley, 96, Gallipolis, Ohio passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 in Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis. He was born June 17, 1916 to the late Roy Floyd and Mary Etta (Darst) Lemley.
After graduating class Valedictorian from Cheshire High School in 1934, Mr. Lemley started his own trucking business. He worked at the GSI (GDC) for 34 years and later for the Medical Plaza/Holzer Medical Center for another 34 years. He married Nancy Jane Belville June 26, 1937 and they were married 56 years before she preceded him in death in 1993.
As a World War II U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Lemley was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Camp Crowder where he was certified as a High Speed Radio Operator. He served in the Signal Corp as a Communications Sergeant with the 112th Airborne Army Signal Battalion and in the European Theater of Operations in France, Belgium, and Germany. His memberships include VFW, Post 4464 where he served in many offices including Post Commander from 1951–1952; the Ohio Grange for over 50 years, Centenary Grange and later the Swan Creek Grange; and he was an Honorary Member of the Gallia County Council on Aging. He attended the Church of Christ in Christian Union, Gallipolis, Ohio.
Mr. Lemley is survived by a daughter, Georgena (Wm. Jay) Harrison, Gallipolis; two granddaughters, Amanda (Justin) Castor, Homosassa, Florida and Stacy (Oscar) Rodriguez, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a great granddaughter, Riley Jaye Castor and two great-grandsons: Liam Michael Castor and Harrison Fain Castor, all of Homosassa, Florida; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Jaye Rodriguez, soon to arrive. He is also survived by a brother, Melvin (Pauline) Darst, Mt. Vernon, Ohio; two sisters, Virginia McDavid, Ypsilanti, Michigan and Viola (Clark) Vanest, Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Belle Lemley.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, February 16, 2013 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis with Pastor Jim Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire with Military Graveside services conducted by the Gallia County Veterans Service Funeral Detail. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Friday 5:00–8:00 PM.
