Gladys Louise (Sayre) Grate

Gladys Louise Grate, 80, formerly of Wilkesville, Ohio, passed away December 17, 2014 at Holzer Senior Care, Gallipolis, Ohio. She was born April 8, 1934 in Letart, West Virginia, daughter of the late Fred and Nellie Sayre. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Harley E. Grate, in 1983.

She was a homemaker and caregiver for several members of her family and she loved children, even though she never had any of her own, she cared for many of her nieces and nephews throughout her lifetime.

Gladys generously volunteered her time throughout the community of Wilkesville baking pies and preparing food for the annual Wilkesville Fish Fry and fund-raisers held at the Wilkesville Community Center. One of her unique talents was the ability to play the piano without the aid of sheet music.

Gladys is survived by two sisters, Opal Callihan, Gallipolis and Judy Piper, Athens, Ohio as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Luster Sayre, Rene Blessing, Richard Sayre, Daniel Sayre, Pauline Robinson, Dora Long, Mildred Strausbaugh, Floyd Sayre and Leo Sayre.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 PM Friday, December 19, 2014 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel, with Brother Richard Moore presiding. Burial will follow in the Salem Center Cemetery, Salem Center. Friends and family may call at the funeral home Friday 11:00 AM-1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wilton Civic Association, P.O. Box 167, Wilkesville, Ohio 45695 for the care and maintenance of the Wilkesville Community Center.
