India Diane Borden-Cullen, 78, Gallipolis, Ohio died of natural causes January 8, 2022 in Gallipolis, Ohio. She was born August 23, 1943 in Gallipolis, Ohio, daughter of the late Rev. Nyle D. and Edna (Hill) Borden. A 1961 Graduate of Gallia Academy High School, she went to Rio Grande College graduating with a Degree in Education. She then performed post graduate work at Ohio University in Music majoring in piano and organ. During her post graduate work, India was in a car accident, breaking her right hand and still performed her final exam left-handed with her trumpet.
India enlisted in the Army and successfully completed Basic Training at Ft. McClellan. After graduating, she was the only woman on base from her class that was chosen to go to the United States Military Academy at West Point as part of the first Women's Group to train there.
India married her former husband, Joseph Cullen and they had a son, William A. B. Cullen. Together, they moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she taught grade and high school. She took several courses at Dalhousie University in Halifax, becoming a paralegal working in provincial government. She also became a real estate broker, property manager and electrician.
She enjoyed singing in big choirs most of her life including two in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Being trained in theatre lighting, stage managing and production in Nova Scotia, she produced the operetta "The Mikado" and arranged for the Japanese Community in Halifax (a military city) to work with production staff to design and make costumes.
India moved back to Gallipolis approximately twenty years ago. Many of the towns' people remember her working in the City Building. She helped renovate the Ariel Theater downtown and was the Program Director for a short time. She was a board member for several years on the Gallia County Emancipation Celebration committee.
In both Nova Scotia and Gallipolis, she was an active member of the Episcopal Church and was an alter server in both.
In her spare time, India enjoyed tennis, squash, traveling, competition driving, navigating car rallies and competitive ballroom dancing.
India is survived by her son, William A.B. Cullen, Halifax, Nova Scotia and her sisters: Emmagene Borden, St. John's, New Foundland, Canada and Nylita Sutton, Kendall, Wisconsin as well as a host of friends.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 4:30 PM Saturday, August 13, 2022 in the St. Peters Episcopal Church, Gallipolis, Ohio. Cremation services were under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, Ohio. Ashes will be flown back to Canada with Emmagene so that Family and Friends there will go to India's favorite bays and lakes for her to visit.
