John D. Thoma, 86, Centerburg, Ohio, passed away Friday, February 3, 2012 in Knox Community Hospital, Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born March 23, 1925 in Columbus to the late John and Ethel (Praither) Thoma. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II, and a Purple Heart recipient November 12, 1944 on the island of Leyte, Philippines. He worked 27 years at Ironsides, retiring in March, 1987. John enjoyed cars, hunting, and his main joy in life was his family.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia "Jenny" (Taylor) Thoma, whom he married October 8, 1947 in Greenup, Kentucky; children: Sally (Ben) Smith, Howard, Ohio; Johnny (Mary) Thoma, Marysville, Ohio and Albert (Barbara) Thoma, Centerburg, Ohio; grandchildren: Lib (Brad) Watts, Chris (Nicole) Thoma, John P. Thoma, and Tyler Smith; one great-grandchild, Allie; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, several nieces, nephews and special friends.
He was preceded in death by caring in-laws, Fonzo and Thelma Taylor and brother, Albert.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon Tuesday, February 7, 2012 in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, 420 First Ave, Gallipolis, Ohio with Pastor Jerry Lewis, officiating. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire, Ohio. Friends and family may call at the funeral home 11:00 am until the time of service Tuesday. Full Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Gallia County Veterans Service Organization.
