Melvin L. Showalter, 74, Rio Grande, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007 in Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis. He received his Masters Degree in Education from Xavier University and was retired as Area Coordinator, Division of Finance, Ohio Department of Education. Previously, he was an Administrator, Coach and Teacher in the New Richmond Exempted Village School System, New Richmond, Ohio. He co-founded the S&S Consulting Firm for public school bus routing which served various Ohio school systems.
An U.S. Army Veteran, he was a member and active volunteer with the Mended Heart Association of America, Holzer Cardiac Center and Bethesda Hospital, Cincinnati, and was also a member of the Simpson Chapel United Methodist Church, Rio Grande.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Ginny Huffman Showalter; daughters: Debbie Showalter, Lebanon, Ohio; Diane (Curtis) Neff Clark, Rio Grande, Ohio and Cathy (Alan Fidler) McFarland, Lebanon, Ohio; seven grandchildren: Lindsey Showalter, Kati McFarland, Heather and Noah Clark, Andrea, Jessica, and Stephen Neff; four great-grandchildren and two sisters: Maxine Dehmann, Utica, Ohio and Shelby Miller, Caldwell, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday in the Fine Arts Building, University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, with Pastor Sherron Courneen officiating. Burial will follow in the Tyn Rhos Cemetery. The American Flag will be folded and presented by the Gallia County Veterans Service Organizations. The body will lie in state at the Fine Arts Building Thursday one half-hour prior to the service. Friends may call at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, 420 First Ave, Gallipolis, Wednesday, 4:00-8:00 PM.
