Harold Thompson Obituary

Harold Eugene Thompson, 85, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Holzer Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Hannelore (Lori) Thompson, his two children Michael E. (Deb) Thompson and Sherri (Jay) Jarrell; grandchildren, Seth (Jessica) Jarrell Cooper, Adam Thompson, Gretchen (Thomas) Magoto, and Carie (Chod) Johnson; as well as four great-grandchildren Zoe and Emmalyn Cooper, Genevieve Magoto, and Reagan Johnson. He was born October 3, 1936 on the family farm in Eno to Alec M. and Laura (Keeler) Thompson. Harold had one brother Paul E. who preceded him in death, as well as his parents.

He attended the Eno Methodist Church and went to school at the Eno School for the first four years before being transferred to Bidwell Porter School where he graduated in 1954. He took a correspondence course in drafting after graduation while working on the farm before going to Richmond, Indiana to live with his aunt and uncle, Bill and Sylvia Eggleton, and obtained employment in the factory where his uncle worked. He moved to Columbus and worked as a payroll accountant before joining the Army in 1958 to be trained as a military policeman at Fort Gordon, Georgia. After graduation from MP school, Harold worked as a clerk typist at the school before being assigned to the Headquarter of US Army in Europe in Heidelberg, Germany to work in the Intelligence Division processing classified material. His enlisted time of three years was extended by four months due to the Berlin wall being built while he was stationed in Germany. Harold met Hannelore (Lori) Mackamul while in Heidelberg, whom he married after being discharged from the Army and returning to Gallia County. They were married June 2, 1962 in the Porter Methodist Church.

Harold started his banking career at the Commercial & Savings Bank on the corner of Second Avenue and Court Street in the Lafayette building. He and Lori moved to Ironton to work for City Loan & Savings as a loan officer spending five years and becoming assistant manager. He moved the family back to Gallia County with a job at the First National Bank of Gallipolis working his way from being a loan officer to president of the Southern Division of the Central Trust Bank of Cincinnati, including the Middleport office, who had purchased the bank.

Harold retired in September 1991. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 30 years, a charter member of the Ole Car Club, a former president of the Historical Society, and a board member and treasurer of the Senior Center.

He enjoyed restoring antique vehicles and was a woodworker for over 40 years. He was the proud father of his two children Mike and Sherri, and very thankful for the love and caring of his wife Lori of 60 years.
