Promolia Stroud Smith, 89, Bidwell, Ohio passed away in her home Sunday, June 18, 2023. Born January 14, 1934 at Alpine, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Robert Charles and Vada (Swain) Stroud. She married Gerald H. Smith who precedes her in death August 1, 2021.
Together, they owned/operated Gerald Smith Hauling and Trash Service. Promolia was always trying new endeavors throughout her life. She was very active in the North Gallia High School Band Boosters throughout her children’s high school years working in every capacity needed, including making band uniforms, and many of the children referred to her as “Grandma” or “Aunt”. A self-taught seamstress, she made clothing for her children and made prom dresses and tuxedos for those who asked. She was a Fuller Brush Salesperson and owned a Ceramics Shop after becoming a Certified Ceramics Teacher. She could make beautiful pieces freehand and was always eager to learn from and teach others as she was very artistic.
Promolia was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Bidwell, Ohio and Gallipolis Area Christian Women’s Club. She was also a co-founder of the John Gee Black Historical Society, Gallipolis, Ohio. In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and going to auctions with her daughter.
She leaves behind to cherish all these memories and more her children: Debra Smith, Ralph Smith and Sandra Riedel, all of Bidwell, Ohio and Jeff Smith, Gallipolis, Ohio; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, three of them which are special “adopted by heart” grandchildren and five great-great-children; sisters and brother: Peggy Patricia Odum, Kansas City, Missouri; Magdalene Smith, Chester, Pennsylvania and Lonnie Stroud, Columbus, Ohio as well as several other extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded by a daughter, Linda Dawn Smith; granddaughter, Alexis Robinson; brother, Ralph Stroud and sister, Bobbie Stroud.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 26, 2023 at 12:00 Noon in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis with co-officiates Rev. Gene Armstrong and Rev. Christian Scott. Burial will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Bidwell, Ohio. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Monday 11:00 AM to the service time.
